Materials

  • Soldering iron (>15 W)
  • Rosin-core solder (don't be afraid of buying lead solder- it's arguably better)
  • Some solid core wire, some stranded wire...
  • (1x) 555 Timer
  • 9 volt battery
  • 9v battery snap
  • PCB (Printed Circuit Board).
  • Electrical tape and/or heat sink.
  • (optional) Solder braid and/or a solder vacuum.
  • Small Vise or helping hand.
  • (1x) 4.7k Resistor
  • (1x) 10K Resistor
  • (1x) 1k Resistor
  • (1x) 1 uF Capacitor
  • Safety Glasses

Overview

In this project: You will learn correct soldering techniques, how to make strong solder joints, and how to solder through-hole components on PCB. Once you get the hang of it, you will find soldering to be easy and enjoyable. We will also learn how to undo soldered connections, an invaluable skill.

Lesson and Resources

Procedure

Part one: Basics

FIrst, please watch aforementioned video, as just about anything there is to say about basic soldering is in that video.

Notes to add:

  • Tinning the soldering iron is important. If you don't tin, you will char the tip and it will stop being hot enough. If this happens, you can clean it by taking a Dremel with a sanding bit and at a slow speed sanding off the outer layer.
